Many times I laughed out loud at his verbal antics, but I was also often caught by his pathos, especially in the section where Wart grows up a bit. Read this book if you like Arthurian legends and philosophy! At a castle party for the royal birth, Merlin the Magician took the King aside. The guards were not there anymore — they must have all gone to the tournament. Was very thick, read in a week, a very satisfying ending. Can't recommend this book highly enough. The first three books were originally published separately between 1938 and 1940; the fourth was added when the first collected version of the stories — titled The Once and Future King — was published 1958. It concentrates on the early years of Arthur, leading to his proclamation as king. At the very top of the stone there was a golden sword handle and a few inches of the blade, shining in the sun. Resting on the block was a giant stone the size of a very large rock. The Sword in the Stone in particular became template for a new telling of the iconic tale of the young Arthur finding himself king by innocently pulling Excalibur from its lodging, with Disney turning it into a hugely successful animated film in 1963. Evil men broke into houses and took what they wanted.
I purchased it as an audiobook on a whim - think it was on sale. The stories were originally collected and written by Sir Thomas Malory, and published in 21 books in 1485. I can't say enough good things about how enjoyable this book was. No king to set the laws. The scene with the jousters well you'll just have to listen to it!! Merlin saw how the foxes and deer followed Arthur. Follow Merlin as he raises, protects and instills his great wisdom on young Arthur, The destined King of Britain. Sir Ector and his two sons rode through London on their way to the tournament.
My son loved the story and the came back asking for more by the same reader. It is partly the characters honest, steadfast Arthur; the outstanding Merlyn, absent-minded, humane and fallible, but always invaluably putting things into perspective; the petulant Kay; noble and generous Sir Ector; the endearingly clumsy King Pellinore; and the animals, too, who are credited with as much individual character as the people. With optimism and boundless enthusiasm, the Robinson family undertakes the extraordinary task of constructing a home for themselves and exploring the primitive island filled with strange and beautiful creatures and exotic fruits and plants. A good knight, Sir Ector, lived in peace with his two sons. At the end of each day when Arthur finished his chores, that was time for the lessons.
